An updated version of Google’s low-tech VR headset was unveiled at Google I/O 2015. The new design has larger diameter (37 mm) lenses, a 45 mm focal length, a can accomodate larger 6″ devices. The sometimes unreliable ring magnet assembly has been dropped in favour of a conductive button that contacts the touch screen to trigger actions. Oh, and iOS users got some love with official Cardboard support for iOS.
Several manufacturers have been producting their own Cardboard variations with larger lenses for a while now, but this official update reaffirms that Google is serious about VR, even if their first hardware offering looks primitive in comparison to the competition. Check out the official Cardboard page for a list of retailers – or to grab the DIY instructions, find a lens supplier (eg AliExpress) and make your own !
